Saed López – ¡Puedo hacerlo, tengo que hacerlo y lo haré!

 

El camino al éxito de un joven autista

Al conversar con Saed López te envuelve una increíble sensación de positivismo y de orgullo. Escuchar su empoderamiento, refuerza la fe de que cuando alguien cree en ti y te brinda la oportunidad de desarrollar tus habilidades únicas, no hay metas inalcanzables.

A sus 26 años, actual estudiante de Polk State College, Saed mejor que nadie confía en sus habilidades y conoce sus áreas de mejora. Pero antes, eso no era así. Tal como nos cuenta, su madre Sandra González, mudarse de Puerto Rico donde después de mucho batallar pudo encontrar un centro educativo que le ofreció un espacio de aprendizaje para Saed, llegar a Lakeland y pasar por dos escuelas que, en vez de ayudarlo, destruyeron todos sus avances, es una de las experiencias más amargas que han vivido como familia.

“Gracias a Dios encontramos a Lakeland Institute for Learning (LIfL), que más que una escuela fue toda una bendición para Saed. Hoy es uno de los dos primeros estudiantes egresados, experiencia que ha cambiado su vida y nuestra vida para siempre”, expresa Sandra.

Saed describe sus sentimientos cuando por primera vez pisó LIfL. “Hacía mucho tiempo que no me sentía tan cómodo y relajado dentro de una escuela. Cuando conocí a los profesores y al personal sentí que podía respirar e inmediatamente supe que sería enseñado de la forma adecuada, y pude superarme en todos los sentidos”.

Y agrega: “Mi paso por esta escuela fue un reto que me hizo ser cada día mejor ya que podía contar con mis profesores para guiarme en cada etapa del camino”.

Apoyo familiar

Todo sus logros no habrían sido posible sin el compromiso que asumió su madre y su familia de hacer lo imposible para que su hijo fuera reconocido con sus necesidades particulares de aprendizaje, y que sus capacidades diferentes fueran honradas de la mejor forma. “Eso lo vi en mi madre con mi hermano que es autista. Ella nunca se rindió y lo mismo hicimos nosotros con Saed y lo seguimos haciendo. La familia es vital en ese proceso”, expresa Sandra.

Y no es para menos. Desde presidir el Comité del Consejo Estudiantil, asumiendo posiciones de liderazgo, socializando con sus pares y participando de actividades extracurriculares, Saed atesora el tipo de ser humano en el que se convirtió.

“Creo que lo más importante es que seas tratado con respeto, que te puedas sentir libre y sin miedo de expresar tus sentimientos. No ser juzgado porque aprendes de forma diferente o hablas diferente. Aprendí que puedes lograr cualquier cosa que te propongas. Que no importa si te dicen que no puedes lograrlo, siempre supe que “Puedo hacerlo, Tengo que hacerlo y lo haré”, no importa si me toma más tiempo que otras personas. He alcanzado muchas de mis metas y sé que lograré graduarme del College”, expresa Saed.

“Yo le diría a todos los padres que crean en sus hijos, que los apoyen como hacen mis padres, que no se sientan avergonzados de ellos. Que no duden en hacer todo lo necesario para preparar a sus hijos para el mundo exterior”, nos dice Saed.

Este joven educado y sensible sabe que en el camino hay altos y bajos, pero aprecia el impulso de sus padres y la educación que recibió en Lakeland Institute for Learning para impulsarlo a conseguir cosas extraordinarias y demostrar que sí se puede cuando contamos con el compromiso de la familia y la entrega de una comunidad educativa consciente de que ser diferentes nos hace únicos y eso contribuye al enriquecimiento de toda la comunidad.

The Road to Success of a Young Man with Autism

Talking with Saed López surrounds you with an incredible feeling of positivity and pride. Hearing his empowerment reinforces the belief that when someone believes in you and gives you the opportunity to develop your unique abilities, there are no unreachable goals.

“Thank God we found Lakeland Institute for Learning (LIfL), which was more than a school—it was a blessing for Saed. Today, he is one of the first two graduates, an experience that has changed his life and our lives forever,” Sandra shares.

Saed describes his feelings when he first set foot in LIfL. “It had been a long time since I felt so comfortable and relaxed in a school. When I met the teachers and staff, I felt like I could breathe, and I immediately knew I would be taught the right way. I was able to better myself in every way.”

He adds: “My time at this school was a challenge that made me better every day because I could count on my teachers to guide me through every stage of the journey.”

 

Family Support

All his achievements would not have been possible without the commitment his mother and family made to do the impossible—ensuring their son’s unique learning needs were recognized and his different abilities honored in the best way. “I saw this in my mother with my brother, who is autistic. She never gave up, and we did the same with Saed—and we continue to do so. Family is vital in this process,” Sandra explains.

And no wonder. From presiding over the Student Council Committee, taking on leadership positions, socializing with his peers, and participating in extracurricular activities, Saed treasures the kind of human being he has become.

“I believe the most important thing is to be treated with respect, to feel free and unafraid to express your feelings. Not to be judged because you learn differently or speak differently. I learned that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. No matter if people say you can’t, I always knew that ‘I can do it, I have to do it, and I will do it,’ even if it takes me more time than others. I’ve achieved many of my goals, and I know I will graduate from college,” says Saed.

“I would tell all parents to believe in their children, to support them as mine do, and not to feel ashamed of them. Don’t hesitate to do everything necessary to prepare your children for the outside world,” Saed tells us.

This educated and sensitive young man knows the journey has its ups and downs, but he values the encouragement from his parents and the education he received at Lakeland Institute for Learning, which propelled him to achieve extraordinary things and prove that yes, it is possible—when we count on family commitment and the dedication of an educational community aware that being different makes us unique, and that uniqueness enriches the entire community.
