“La música es mi energía vital, mi refugio y mi pasión”

Un violinista cuya trayectoria y sensibilidad artística han tocado escenarios y corazones por igual.

Conversar con Lemay O James, consagrado violinista formado con grandes maestros en su natal Cuba, hasta llegar a convertirse en el primer violín de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de La Habana, es como disfrutar de un sorbo de agua fresca. Pero lo mejor de todo es tener la dicha de escucharlo tocar.

Comenzó a estudiar música a los siete años, impulsado por el sueño de su madre de verlo brillar en grandes escenarios. “Estudié en el Conservatorio de Música y en la Escuela Nacional de Arte de La Habana. A los 19 años audicioné para la Filarmónica y obtuve la plaza. Llevamos nuestra música a escenarios internacionales y, estando en México, decidí quedarme, algo muy arriesgado por lo que suponía abandonar el puesto que tenía en la orquesta nacional de Cuba comunista”.

Así llegó a la ciudad de Tampa, donde comenzó tocando en restaurantes de Ybor City. “En uno de ellos conocí a Teresa Martínez, quien me consiguió una beca universitaria y abrió las puertas a escenarios de mayor magnitud. Audicioné para la Orquesta Sinfónica de Lakeland y desde entonces he participado en decenas de eventos importantes y grandes recepciones”.

Para Lemay, la música es su vitamina, su energía y su pasión. “Disfruto todo lo que hago a través de la música, desde tocar para grandes personalidades hasta llevar mi talento a un sencillo hogar de ancianos. Algo que realmente me hace feliz es tocar en bodas, interactuar con los novios, recorrer las mesas y compartir mi música con los invitados. Eso es llevar felicidad, y esa es mi verdadera razón de ser”, concluye el artista con la sencillez y calidez que definen tanto su arte como su espíritu.

A violinist whose journey and artistic sensitivity have touched both stages and hearts.

Speaking with Lemay O James, a renowned violinist trained by great masters in his native Cuba who rose to become first violin of the National Symphony Orchestra of Havana, feels like enjoying a refreshing sip of water. Yet the true privilege is hearing him perform.

He began studying music at the age of seven, inspired by his mother’s dream of seeing him shine on great stages. “I studied at the Conservatory of Music and at the National School of Art in Havana. At 19, I auditioned for the Philharmonic and earned my position. We performed on international stages, and while in Mexico I made the decision to stay, a risky step considering the position I held in the orchestra.”

That journey eventually brought him to Tampa, where he began performing in restaurants throughout Ybor City. “In one of them I met Teresa Martínez, who got me a scholarship and opened doors to larger stages. I auditioned for the Lakeland Symphony Orchestra, and since then I have performed at dozens of important events and major receptions.”

For Lemay, music is his vitamin, his energy, and his passion. “I enjoy everything I do through music, from performing for distinguished personalities to bringing my talent to a simple nursing home. What truly makes me happy is playing at weddings, interacting with the couple, moving from table to table, and sharing my music with the guests. That is bringing happiness, and that is my true reason for being,” the artist concludes with the simplicity and warmth that define both his artistry and his spirit.
